Sometimes your mind plays games with you. Sometimes only a moment can spark a fire, make or break a resolve. This is just what happened with my friend Kirti as she was travelling today morning in the usual DTC bus, 'my big yellow car' she calls it. Sitting next to a girl on the seat looking out the window, I'm sure she didn't know she wouldn't be able to attend the seminar she was supposed to at college later that morning.
As she saw a hefty uncle-turned-dude type guy moving towards their seat and clutching it for support, she must have thought as girls travelling in buses think when they see such a male specie, "Here we go again...". Sure, some letchy behviour was expected out of him and she'll have to keep an eye, but she didn't have the remotest idea about how things were goin to end up that morning.
As the bus driver jammed the brakes, in a movement of inertia, the man pressed himself against the girl next to kirti, feeling her up at all the wrong places.Kirti, witnessing this, glanced at the girl who seemed perturbed and uncomfortable, but made no signs of a protest. Well, thought Kirti, if she doesn't care, why should I? I'm not going to be doing soicial service here, and got back to staring out the window. When the God foresaken man repeated the act again, silent tears started rolling down the girl's eyes.
It was this moment, I feel, something must have snapped in Kirti's mind. Within that milli second she had decided, there just were no two ways about it. She had to fight for this girl, give her strength and more importantly sense to handle the situation.
What followed was that Kirti convinced the girl to call the police, got into a row with the molestor, proved to be the only person in the bus who agreed to give a statement against the man even though many other passengers had witnessed the scene and also managed to warn the inspector to take due action saying that she would be following up the case.
All it took was a moment and all was clear in her mind. Let us all not even wait for that moment to come. Let us all raise our vioce against injustice whether we end up being a victim or a witness. Remember it's all in the mind : submission and silence or courage and resolve
